Emotions are your body’s reactions to a particular event. Some examples of emotions are anger, fear, surprise, disgust, joy and sadness. You may be experiencing a few of them right now as you get ready for your surgery! Although it’s normal to display emotions, when they are blocked rather than expressed, they can impair your health. It’s important during this time to address how you’re feeling and learn how to cope with your changing emotions.
Surgery and Recovery
Know what to expect during your hospital stay and things you can do to help your recovery.
You’ll be spending several days in the hospital after your surgery. It will be helpful to familiarize yourself with the facility and its services. Set up a tour of the hospital to check out the rooms, cafeteria and/or coffee shops, accommodations for loved ones, gift shop, waiting areas, chapel, pharmacy and information desk. Some hospitals offer chaplain services and in-room massages for patients. Familiarizing yourself ahead of time will help alleviate stress before your surgery.
Friends and Family
Understand the value of a strong support system before and after your surgery.
A strong support network is an important component of your surgery and recovery. Prior to your surgery, determine who will be with you at the hospital and while you are recovering at home. It’s helpful to create lists of friends and family and their phone numbers and emails so that you and/or your loved ones can communicate your status during and after surgery and provide updates during your recovery.

Who will take care of the dog? Do you need someone to pick up mail and newspapers? Will you need meals for your family after you get home? What do you need to take with you to the hospital? How many cardiac rehab visits does your insurance company cover? Figuring out and completing all of the to-dos prior to your surgery will help minimize your stress and give you peace of mind that things are taken care of.
